Richard Peynot

What are the main reasons European companies outsource IT?

Based on a recent Giga survey of European CIOs, the three most common reasons for outsourcing IT are: lack of internal competencies, the need to focus on the applications directly related the core business of the company, and the desire to remove focus from applications that do not bring additional business value. Computerworld, 3/31/03:   Microsoft bolsters Wi-Fi security in XP; HP unveils 802.11g laptops

Giga, 3/27/03:  Criteria for Selection: Full Disk Encryption

Jan Sundgren

While theft of computer hardware can cause substantial costs, ensuring that the data on stolen desktop and laptop computers cannot be accessed is often more important than the recovery of the hardware, as several high-profile incidents have demonstrated. The most effective and straightforward approach to stopping thieves from accessing data on a stolen computer is full disk encryption, in which the entire hard disk, including the operating system and applications, as well as the data files, is rendered unreadable by anyone without the proper access credentials. This approach closes many avenues of attack typically left open by file or folder encryption, and it does not rely on users to decide what needs to be encrypted.
