Dell

VNUnet, 4/14/03:  We're all on the road to Dell

Guy Matthews

Michael Dell continued his quest for global domination by stating the obvious when he told a press conference that corporate chief information officers were looking for standardised technologies to drive down the costs of their IT infrastructure.

By "standardised", he meant Intel-based hardware, and he went on to say that Linux was the world's fastest growing operating system. Notable for its absence was any reference to Microsoft, an oversight easily explained by the fact that Dell was sharing a platform with Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison - no friend of Microsoft.

The technology and investment analysts listen to Mr Dell because, amid all the bloodletting, he continues to hit the numbers. But is he right about corporates moving to standardised technology? To hit his $60bn revenue target he will have to be.

In addition, Microsoft unveiled an updated version of its virus-scanning application protocol interface (VSAPI 2.5),  which also allows partners to integrate their complementary offerings with the product.

The Road to Innovation

The New York Times, 4/14/03:  An Inventor's Memoir as Road Map

By TERESA RIORDAN

THREE years ago, Randice-Lisa Altschul was a celebrated entrepreneur and media darling. Her most recent invention — a disposable cellphone — caught the attention of the BBC, CNBC, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, Parade, Glamour, Business Week and The Financial Times of London, all of which interviewed her. She was invited, twice, to lecture at Harvard Business School.

Today, Ms. Altschul's company, Dieceland Technologies, is $2.3 million in the red and it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January. And she is being sued by creditors for control of her patents.

"Other people might go get drunk and cry in their beer," Ms. Altschul said. "But that's not my style."

Her style is, rather, to come out swinging. Last month, Ms. Altschul self-published a memoir, "Financiers, Lawyers, and Other Assorted Snakes: An Entrepreneur's Story," which lambastes what she says are the feckless lawyers and fiendish financiers who contributed to her financial demise.
