Whew... spent 3.5 hours going to San Diego so that my daughter could see the Renoir exhibit at the Balboa. The trip back to LA was much better. Only 2 hours.
Having seen several great shows at the Balboa, I can tell you that the reason a person would want an original painting - or photograph - instead of a poster or other reproduction is the life of the color that an original has. There is nothing like it. The "real" paint just makes all the difference in every sense of perception. Coincidentally I had a similar feeling about Ansel Adams original prints where the subtle gray-scale achieved by an original B/W photo print could never be matched in poster reproduction. It diminishes about 30% of the information that is there.
So go see a show with some original works of art.
