Light Holiday Reading: I've been making my way through "Pragmatic ADO.NET" by Shawn Wildermuth. Mister AdoGuy.com and all. It has two redeeming values : a good chapter on typed datasets and Shawn's freely sprinkled personal experience as a programmer. I don't think its worth the asking price but it should be on your list if you want to get into the habit of pressing datasets into the role of full fledged business objects. I'm not entirely certain that this is a good idea, but at the same time I remember plenty of people had similar feelings when Nerinda Varama designed Dynasets (the precursor of Recordsets) at Microsoft 10 years ago. Just look how prevalent recordsets are now. Of the better known "OO authors" I think only Martin Fowler has been appreciative of what Datasets can do, unfortunately the actual printed version of "Enterprise Application Patterns" uses mostly Java examples. Wonder what happened there since his draft had about equally as many .NET samples - especially when it came to the area of showing of Data Table based models. A lot of that was edited out in print. A real bummer.

Game of the Season: Splinter Cell is fast shaping up to be my favorite. Great game, innovate ideas, super environment - the realism of the graphics are aweseome - and the voice of my Best Man as Sam Fisher. It's a small world.  (I keep smiling every time I think of Sam Fisher making a toast....)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I especially liked Sam's list :

There is a lot that I very thankful and greatful for on this Thanksgiving. It has been both a hard year and a joyous one, but overall I am extremly greatful for all that I have. I am thankful for:

  • My beautiful wife and best friend Susan and our wonderful son Jonathan. My father-in-law Clem has a saying thatI hold dearly "You can never repay your children back for the joy that they bring you."
  • Our child to come (secrets given later!)
  • My in-laws Clem and Elizabeth who are best friends first
  • My parents Mario & Catherine who came here from Italy and taught me respect for the work ethic
  • My brother and sister, Mark and Maria
  • All the wonderful people that sent Sue and I mail messages after Sue's situation. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You touch my heart
  • This place, this whole blogging thing: not only has it provided me jobs (people watching out for me) but intellectual stimulation, friends, a home. You all rock!
  • All my dear friends from Blogland and elsewhere: Peter, Ingo, Tomas, Chris, Jim, Brian, Brad, Sam, Jason, Don, Clemens, Kirk, John, Paresh, Matt, Jack, Hugh, John Lam, Joe,  Caroline, Drew, Greg, Matt, Mike, Thomas , Shawn, Simon,   James, Dave, Gordon

Happy Thanksgiving!
