A dot-com flameout enters the VoIP spotlight
TheGlobe.com President Ed Cespedes explains the reincarnation of his company as a VoIP provider and weighs in on Wi-Fi. [CNET News.com] 'VoIP will 100 percent displace cellular. You can surf the Net now on your cell phone, but the throughput on even 3G phones is a joke. It's so slow and so expensive. A Wi-Fi-enabled device surfs at 100 times the speed virtually for free. If Wi-Fi can get ready for voice, as soon as next year, you'll see Wi-Fi-connected phones, and all these Wi-Fi carriers will have roaming agreements. The next thing you know, bye-bye cellular.' I'm thinking we'll need a few more hotspots before that happens! I like the idea but it looks to me like there's a lot of bluster in this interview.

[GAM-National] 'Yesterday, Martin aides found in their daily briefing books a crib sheet containing two black-and-white photocopied pictures - one of the late, former California congressman Sonny Bono (of Sonny and Cher fame) and the other of the Irish rock star. Underneath their pictures was a phonetically correct pronunciation of their names - B-OH-NO for Sonny Bono and B-AW-NO for Bono. This was so Martin staggers - spokesman Scott Reid is said to have the most difficulty - wouldn't cause international embarrassment.'

Selling Pvt. Lynch
From the White House to Random House, the plucky ex-POW has been badly used. But even as the right turned on her, she handled her week in the spotlight like a hero. [Salon] 'Lynch's insistence on national television that she felt used by the Pentagon for making a show of her rescue and for telling absurd tales about her alleged heroics was just the latest cut at the White House's shrinking credibility when it comes to the war in Iraq.
Also, her personal Iraq tale about an unprepared group of lost, confused and exhausted soldiers making wrong turn after wrong turn before being boxed into an ambush where 11 soldiers were killed is not exactly the stuff of recruiting brochures.' 'Shrinking' credibility? They've never had any credibility with most of us. Please note the long running Google Box on my Fallout page.
