A historic day in Edmonton: Gretzky returns and HNIC broadcasts in HDTV
CBC Sports is broadcasting in High Definition Television for the first time on Saturday, Nov. 22 as a historic day at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton unfolds. The Oilers celebrate their 25th anniversary and a legend returns, on CBC's Hockey Night In Canada. Ron MacLean hosts the coverage, when a National Hockey League record crowd, in excess of 55,000 fans, will be on hand to witness the return of Wayne Greztky. Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers' alumni take on Guy Lafleur and some former Montreal Canadiens legends in The Mega Stars Game. Hockey Night in Canada will use this opportunity for their first venture into High Definition Television and the use of new technological experiments-robotic cameras and cameras on cranes will be used, and an Omni-cam will be mounted above the glass and moved from one end of the rink to the other. At 7 p.m. ET, live from Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Hockey Night in Canada will present The Heritage Classic, featuring the current-day Oilers battling the Habs. To mark the inaugural foray into the future of broadcasting on CBC Television, Bell Express Vu, Shaw Cablesystems, Starchoice, Rogers Cable and Videotron will provide the feed of the broadcast in HDTV for their subscribers. The blurb is from an email I got. The link is to a page with a bit of information about HDTV. My favourite quote from the page is 'In focus groups conducted by Samsung Canada, CBC[base ']s Hockey Night in Canada was the program that most participants indicated would get them to consider upgrading to HDTV.' Crazy Canucks!

PC World: "Iomega's solution is a drive and high-capacity removable disks. Fastora is hyping a one-drive NAS device, while Nexsan's answer is a two-unit storage array. Iomega and Nexsan both claim their storage products are cheaper than tape alternatives and their message seems to be the same: the tape drive's days are numbered." [lawrence's notebook] We're conditioned to the idea that it's ok to leave a tape sitting on a shelf, but a drive?! Once you can get your head around that though you have to say 'bring it on!'

Inside the two worlds of George Bush
Jonathan Freedland reports on the first full day of the president's state visit. [Guardian Unlimited] 'The Queen tried to appeal to her guest, showing off items of Americana - like Queen Victoria's snap of Buffalo Bill -but it was a strain. At one point the Prez seemed to be staring at the ceiling.' Having trouble concentrating?

Keynote's XML Connections
For its Keynote application, Apple had created an XML syntax, APXL (short for Apple Presentation XML), and made its schema publicly available. That means you can build presentations outside of Keynote using data stored in apps like FileMaker Pro and 4D. David Miller explains, and shows you how to leverage this functionality. [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service: MacDevCenter.com] Wonderful stuff. I'd love to dig into this.

Hey the government of Canada has...
Hey the government of Canada has RSS feeds. They're pretty good, not bad at all, but they call their feeds 0.91 but use features only available in 2.0. I'm hesitant to criticize, because after all it's the thought that counts. But my aggregator will ignore the cool 2.0 stuff because it takes the version seriously. Best thing to do is to just change the version number to 2.0 and accept a hearty thanks from your neighbors to the south. And thanks to Lawrence for the pointers (he's Canadian). [Scripting News]
