Op-Ed Columnist: Looting the Future
That is, the federal government [~] including Medicare, which Mr. Bush has given new responsibilities without new resources [~] is nowhere near solvent. [snip] Everything we know suggests that Mr. Bush's people have given as little thought to running America after the election as they gave to running Iraq after the fall of Baghdad. And they will have no idea what to do when things fall apart.
Junior will stop at nothing to get re-elected.

Wal-Mart Invades, and Mexico Gladly Surrenders
Wal-Mart's power is changing Mexico in the same way it changed the economic landscape of the United States. [New York Times: NYT HomePage] '"Part of globalization is adopting the methods and customs of another country," said Francisco Rivero, an economic analyst in Mexico City.
Though it came to this country only 12 years ago, Wal-Mart is doing more business — closing in on $11 billion a year — than the entire tourism industry. Wal-Mart sells $6 billion worth of food a year, more than anyone else in Mexico. In fact, it sells more of almost everything than almost anyone. Economists say its price cuts actually drive down the country's rate of inflation.' [snip] However, in the United States, a unionized supermarket worker makes, on average, about $19 an hour. At Wal-Mart, where there are no unions, that worker makes about $9 an hour. In Mexico, for a newly hired Wal-Mart cashier, the pay stub reads about $1.50 a hour. Good God. Apparently they are also the number one retailer in Canada.

When Technology Is Heartwarming
In the New York Times, David Pogue writes of his experience using iSight and iChat AV, Theres a lot of junk in technology, a lot of hassle and frustration, a lot of disappointment. But this moment was like a TV commercial. It was an emotional, powerful, simple, perfect example of how technology can change a moment, solve a problem, and despite the gulf of time and distance, bring you face to face with the people you love.
