The story so far: Wednesday night me and Jen arrived in Montreal, and walked from the train station to our first hostel. The next day we moved to a cheaper one, which is where I'm staying now, Auberge Chez-Jean. When you walk into this place, it's initially pretty surprising. There are some normal hostel-like rooms, but most of the people are in this one large loft room. Mattresses are scattered all over the floor, people sleep in hanging hammocks, and there's a mezzanine overhead where people also sleep. One person described it as like the island in the movie "The Beach" (maybe a bit less glamorous).
From Wed. till Sunday we did the usual traveling thing: walking around a lot and eating in restaurants. One fabulous thing about fancy restaurants here is "Apportez votre vin," which means you bring your own wine. Instead of ordering wine in the restaurant and paying twice as much as it's worth, you just pick some up beforehand and bring it with you! I guess I've heard of this before, but I didn't know it existed in North America.
So on Monday Jen left and I went to work. By the way, all that time she was here, we were supposed to be looking for a place to live, but I gave up before making even one phone call. I just can't muster up the effort to do it. Although my current hostel isn't that great: no weekly rate, less personal space (right now I'm in a double bed with some random), the shower is too cold, and I'm too far from work to walk ... If I really get fed up I'll move.
