John Wiseman talks about the Symbolics graphics system in an archived lemonodor article.
This post on comp.lang.lisp mentions that the S-graphics system was ported to Common Lisp and re-released as 'Mirai'. The post goes on to point to a posting on the Izware forum about Mirai that mentions its use in the Lord of the Rings movies for the Gollum character.
"Raitt and his team sculpted all of Gollum's expressions in IZware's Mirai, a real time gaming program Raitt had helped develop in San Francisco." "The Gollum facial model consisted of 675 sculpted expressions, with 9,000 sculpted muscle shapes."
