It's supposed to be summer in New Zealand, where I am. Over the last week or two we've had a month of rain in a day, Icebergs appearing, extended ski seasons, tornadoes, frost and hail. Crazy.
A few of the recent floods have been called 'one in hundred
year'floods. We've had so many of these it seems that they're trying to
justify why they still call them that:
The100-year
flood that hit the Waikanae River yesterday could not becompared to the
massive floods that devastated large parts of the lowerNorth Island
almost a year ago, he said. The100-year estimate applied
only to the precise area where it wasmeasured and the Waikanae River
did not suffer a 100-year flood lastyear. Itwas a statistical
blip that nearby Paekakariki recorded a 125-yearflood in October 2003,
and Kapiti Coast residents should not beconcerned they would be hit by
such massive floods more often infuture, he said.
I'm guessing the person who said that doesn't live in the Kapiti Coast.
