Steve Pilgrim:  "Bottom line: SpamAssassin Pro is leaking like it was shot with a shotgun... My next trial is probably going to be Walter Mossberg's suggestion of ChoiceMail."

Are they exploiting our collective paranoia?
On one hand, I appreciate that there's tons of "security experts" out there constantly looking for software vulnerabilities.  On the other hand, I think they're going overboard in feeding a seemingly endless stream of security alerts to the news media, one after the other, including many that may be relatively unimportant.  Are they intentionally appealing to the post-911 paranoia that the Government and news media have so effectively helped to instill into the collective psyche?  I can't help but ask if they're doing it more to promote themselves and their services than to be helpful to the general public.  Just a thought and I realize I could be totally wrong here.

Robert K. Brown makes a good point this morning about a recently revealed vulnerabiity in Microsoft Word:  "If this "flaw" has been around for five years and nobody has noticed it until now, how badly does it need to be patched? It seems extremely unlikely that anybody could actually exploit this hole."

Yo Jenny!

I'm glad to see that Jenny might be back - I've missed her and I'm not the only one - so has Michael Wilson, Horst Prillinger, the Loebrichs, and Bill Simoni (from my subscriptions, anyway)...

Ananova (9/13/02 at 2:55 PM GMT):  Microsoft researcher unearths first ever smiley :-)  [via Megarad Technologies 9/14/02 at 7:27 AM GMT-8]

Karlin Lillington (9/14/02 at 10:54 AM GMT):  "From BoingBoing: a link to a gallery of ancient smiley icons... while Microsoft digs up an email with the first DOS-era smiley."

Curtis Burns (9/13/02 at 3:54 PM GMT-5): "Disclaimer - I'm linked to twice, which means, I guess, that someone actually reads this goddamned thing [insert smiley here]."  Hehe.

Bruce Loebrich (9/13/02 at 5:34 PM GMT-5):  "As interesting as it is to read a verbose thread on how this occurs, wouldn't it be more interesting if these relationships were propagated automatically somehow? Automatic mechanisms like referrers, trackback and the source element in RSS 0.92 exist, but only seem to go one level deep. If I find a story on Google News and have to read five more articles before I find out it originated on Reuters, there is no way to indicate this without hand writing a long series of attributions, let alone trace it automatically. This would seem even more important when trying to follow the flow of a conversion happening on multiple websites as sometimes happens on weblogs.  :)"  Interesting perspective.

So, now I'm wondering where Ananova picked up on the news item...
