Macromedia v. Microsoft
Another link from Scripting News (Thanks Dave!) which brings up a very good point - Flash is going up against Microsoft! How did this happen? What's MS going to do about it? The browser battle is over in real terms, but is the real war between HTML & Flash? Personally, I think they'll just co-exist - HTML has a massive installed base, the tools are cheap (Notepad!) and it's simple. Flash tools are expensive ($500 for MX), it's complex but it's the only real option for creating rich content on the web.
What happened to the other contenders? Java is out of the XP install, all the standards based solutions have fallen by the wayside (SVG, SMIL, etc.) and javascript/dhtml doesn't have the dev tools to make it a valid option for designers.
The release of MX and it's forthcoming server integration will make it very attractive for use as a front end to web applications and the elusive web services. Let's just hope that MS leave Macromedia alone and let them have their slice of the pie.
