Dear MoveOn Supporter,
Most of us realize that this administration's tax cuts and vastly increased
spending have destroyed any chance of eliminating the national debt for
another generation. These deficits are just a way of spending money we
don't have and making our children pay for it later. But some may not know
all the other ways this administration is hurting our young: cutting the low
income welfare-to-work childcare program; cutting state funding to prevent
child abuse; proposing changes in student loans that will cost a billion
dollars extra in interest rates; and proposing to eliminate the federal lead
testing program for children in substandard housing. It has attacked our
nation's clean air and clean water laws, designed to give our children a
livable environment, while doing nothing to curb the epidemic of gun
violence in our nation's schools.
If you're not sure our children can survive another generation of children-
hostile policies, there is something you can do. You can support our

Support figures like Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota (whom the
Children's Defense Fund gives a perfect 100% pro-child rating, as it does
MoveOn endorsed candidates Harkin and Holt). Wellstone understands who
loses through Bushenomics. At the end of the Clinton era, he wrote, "[A]
surplus, if it materializes, won't belong to me; it won't belong to adults.
It will belong to our children and to our grandchildren. Whatever surplus we
have after we take care of urgent priorities ought to be used to pay down
the debt. We put that debt on our children's shoulders with Ronald Reagan's
borrow-and-spend policies of the 1980s."
Of course, all talk of surplus is long gone now, gone in a $300 tax rebate
borrowed from our children and tax breaks for special interests. Perhaps
