QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND "Maybe death's hour too will send us out new-born towards undreamed-lands, Maybe life's call to us will never find an end. Courage my heart, take leave & fare thee well." - - Herman Hesse (from "The Glass Bead Game") Hesse died on August 9th, 1962. The German poet/novelist, depicted the duality of spirit & nature, body versus mind & the individual's spiritual search outside restrictions of society. He won the 1946 Nobel Prize for Literature. BUMPER STICKER OF THE WEEK Seen this week in California; " HONK IF YOU'RE RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR " THIS WEEKEND IN HISTORY August 9th, 1945 -- The U.S. drops a 2nd Atomic bomb on Japan. In Nagasaki about 70,000 civilians die immediately. Russia gets Truman's message & the Cold War arms race begins. August 10th, 1988 -- President Reagan signs H.R. 442, offering apologies to Japanese-American citizens interned during World War II & providing for individual payments of $20,000 to each surviving internee & a $1.25 billion education fund. In 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt authorized the internment of 100,000 Japanese Americans imprisoned in remote desert areas. Hawaii's 150,000 Japanese Americans were spared internment when the business community, media, local governments & general population rushed to their support. The Pentagon has awarded Colorado State researchers a half million bucks to genetically engineer a tree that would change colors when exposed to a germ or chemical attack. Taxpayers & government watchdog groups are befuddled by the expenditure, AS IF the thousands of people keeling over in the streets from a chemical attack wouldn't be indicative enough that there was something wrong. Oh, Lord, won't you find me a WMD? My friends won't send forces, or money
to me.
Looked hard under sand dunes; there's nothing to see, So Lord, won't you find
me a WMD?
Oh, Lord, won't you find me some chemicals, please? France and Australia are
laughing back at me.
I wait for intelligence each day until three, So Lord, won't you find some banned
chemicals, please?
Oh, Lord, won't you buy me a fight in Iran? There's oil in there, Lord; please
give me their sand.
Prove that you love me and buy me a plan, Oh, Lord, won't you find me a fight
in Iran?
Oh, Lord, won't you find me a WMD? The Dems might just rally and get off their
knees.
Elections are coming; there's nothing to see, So Lord, won't you find me a Dubya
MD?
Rhino's Blog Reader responds to the DARPA Futures Market A Rhino's Blog Reader, upon reading the Pentagon press release on the proposed futures market on terror & assassinations, sent the following note to to the DARPA contact. (SARCASM WARNING) Is there any substitute program to the just cancelled Futures Market in which I can bet on / invest in the political assassinations of various heads of state or political figures? It seemed like such a safe investment when you compare it to what's going on in corporate America and the stock market in general. With our country's track record of so many covert activities and politically motivated killings in so many different countries, how could anyone lose money betting on more of the same? Has there ever been a futures market where the only way to lose money is taking a "short" position? Hell, if we've been able to assassinate anyone we want without the additional profit motive inherent in free market trading, it should be no problem to make tons of money doing it more often! I'm in, just tell me where to send the check. Also, could you please advise if such an investment and the resulting windfall profits are subject to capital gains taxes, or do they qualify for any number of tax shelters currently favored by the administration? Hope to hear from you with good news. Merle Haggard has released a new CD featuring a song called, "That's The News" which criticizes the media for highlighting stories like Laci Peterson & Kobi Bryant while U.S. soldiers are dying daily in Iraq. A decidedly different tone than his 1970 pro-American, "The Fightin' Side Of Me." Haggard has also written an essay for his web site that in 3 paragraphs makes several important points. "Hag's Editorial" is RHINO'S WEEKEND BOTTOM LINE. RHINO'S WEEKEND BOTTOM LINE Hag's Editorial By Merle Haggard, www.merlehaggard.com, June 2003 ...I don't even know the Dixie chicks, but I find it an insult for all the men and women who fought and died in past wars when almost the majority of America jumped down their throats for voicing an opinion. It was like a verbal witch-hunt and lynching. Whether I agree with their comments or not has no bearing. And in the same breath let me say that I have become a fan of this new little kid, Toby Keith. There is some humor in me calling Toby Keith little. God bless this great country and I pray he keeps a close eye on us in these last days. And God knows the headlines of today surely indicate that were living in that time now. Seems lately we're awfully quick to criticize and pleased with ourselves to be part of the majority. As a country we need to look inward for the answers to the energy of the future. We need to bring down our demands for oil, rebuild some bridges and highways and allow the farmers to grow something that replenishes the soil. Those who don't know what that is, should do some research. The problem is not in Iraq and the answers are not in Iran. I hope were not buried alive beneath this pending financial collapse if the pipeline doesn't get through. Surely everything doesn't depend on oil!
