QUOTE OF THE DAY "Of all days to use Ohio as a political backdrop, the president - no friend of working people - has chosen Labor Day. I hope his tour of the state will include the empty factories and bankrupt corporations." - - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) (Labor Day 2003) KNOW YOUR HISTORY - SEPTEMBER 2nd 1969 -- The 1st 2 machines of ARPANET were connected at Prof. Len Kleinrock's lab at UCLA. The US Dept. of Defense's Advanced Research and Projects Agency (ARPANET) launched a self-healing computer network with TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol). By the early 1980's the military component became a separate network and the true birth of today's Internet is marked. RHINO HERE: I saw a bumper sticker yesterday that was obviously on the car for a long time, but I just happened to see it on Labor Day. It said, "The Labor Movement - The Folks That Brought You The Weekend" Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful responses about spreading Rhino's Blog far & wide. Virus Fix #2 - Urban Myth? I also received several responses regarding the virus fighting suggestions. It may be necessary for me to eat a bit of crow concerning #2, which suggested a new list entry of AAAAA. One reader sent me a link to snopes.com, the urban myth fighting web site which says that idea is a myth. http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/quickfix.htm "Wo T" - Shrub's Deadly Franchise For World Leaders If the shrub gang (Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, et al) thought they could create a new, old style empire by pre-emptive invasions of any countries they set their sites on, they must be having some 2nd thoughts what with the ongoing "problems" they're having in their 1st & 2nd targets; Afghanistan & Iraq. But even if they fail at their neo-world domination, Naomi Klein of the UK Guardian argues in today's RHINO'S BOTTOM LINE, that they have succeeded in creating a new global franchise which she dubs, "Wo T", marketing language for War On Terror. In her provocative article entitled, "A Deadly Franchise", she cites, country by country, how world leaders are using the gang's Wo T franchise as an easy-to-assemble toolkit for any mini-empire looking to get rid of the opposition and expand its power." But first: 37,137 Iraqi Civilians Killed In The War The Village Voice reports that an in depth study by The Iraqi Freedom Party, which interviewed undertakers, hospital officials and ordinary citizens has determined that as many as 37,137 civilians were killed since the beginning of the invasion, 6,103 of them in Baghdad, not including members of unofficial militias, paramilitary groups, or Saddam's Fedayeen units. A Deadly Franchise
Naomi Klein, The Guardian, Thursday August 28, 2003
The Marriott hotel in Jakarta was still burning when Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono,
Indonesia's security minister, explained the implications of the day's attack: "Those
who criticise about human rights being breached must understand that all the
bombing victims are more important than any human rights issue."
In a sentence, we got the best summary yet of the philosophy underlying Bush's
so-called War on Terror. Terrorism doesn't just blow up buildings; it blasts
every other issue off the political map. The spectre of terrorism - real and
exaggerated - has become a shield of impunity, protecting governments around
the world from scrutiny for their human rights abuses.
Many have argued that the War on Terror is the US government's thinly veiled
excuse for constructing a classic empire, in the model of Rome or Britain. Two
years into the crusade, it's clear this is a mistake: the Bush gang doesn't have
the stick-to-it-ness to successfully occupy one country, let alone a dozen. Bush
and the gang do, however, have the hustle of good marketers, and they know how
to contract out. What Bush has created in the WoT is less a "doctrine" for
world domination than an easy-to-assemble toolkit for any mini-empire looking
to get rid of the opposition and expand its power.
The War on Terror was never a war in the traditional sense. It is, instead, a
kind of brand, an idea that can be easily franchised by any government in the
market for an all-purpose opposition cleanser. We already know that the WoT works
on domestic groups that use terrorist tactics such as Hamas or the Armed Revolutionary
Forces of Colombia (Farc). But that's only its most basic application. WoT can
be used on any liberation or opposition movement. It can also be applied liberally
on unwanted immigrants, pesky human rights activists and even on hard-to-get-out
investigative journalists....
