Senator John Edwards is reportedly making
surprising gains in the Iowa race by refusing to say anything negative about
his opponents (except shrub of course). In a keynote speech at the Commonwealth
Club of San Francisco, Edwards said the Republican failures in the 1996 and 1998
elections show the price of running on anger.

Last week's L.A. Weekly ran a piece, reprinted at Tom Paine.com, predicting
that if Congressman Gephardt doesn't pull off an outright win in Iowa, not only
his presidential run will be finished, but so will his political career. No Rhino

Senator John Kerry last week collected endorsements from
fellow Senator Edward Kennedy, The Concord Monitor, The Nashua Telegraph, The
Manchester Union Leader & last
but not least, Carole King. The legendary Singer/song writer will play a series
of concerts, convinced that Kerry has the "integrity and dignity" needed
in a President.
No mention made of his Skull & Bones history.

General Wesley Clark gained another endorsement last week. Unlikely one might
deduce, that former Nader supporter Michael Moore would line up behind the General.
Mike sez, "I believe that Wesley Clark will end this war. He will
make the rich pay their fair share of taxes. He will stand up for the rights
of women, African Americans, and the working people of this country. And he will
cream George W. Bush." Below are a few links to pieces on Clark, including
one reporting that he's a die hard supporter of the infamous School Of The Americas.

Facing questions, CLARK backs Army school
By Joanna Weiss, The Boston Globe, 1/17/2004
CONCORD, N.H. -- Retired General Wesley K. Clark sometimes downplays his Army
background, and criticizes the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy
on gays. But there is one military institution he vigorously defends: the controversial
academy once known as the US Army School of the Americas.

Today's RHINO'S
BOTTOM LINE is by The Nation's John Nichols who attempts
to assess the dynamics of the current primary process & give his take
on the different implications of a Dean win, 1 with a strong delegate support
on the progressive side (Kucinich &/or Sharpton), or 1 with strong delegate
support of the Democratic Leadership Council. One (Rhino) may not concur with
his conclusions, yet he provides valuable insights.

Dean's Fifty-State Strategy By John Nichols, The Nation , January 16, 2004 ...Of course, Dean wants to win Iowa and New Hampshire - and if late polls are to be believed, he could take both. But he doesn't want to be the Hart or McCain of the 2004 race; he wants to head the Democratic ticket. To that end, he and his aides have developed a fifty-state strategy designed to beat the field early and prevail later against the one or two who survive to challenge him in the big-state primaries of late February and early March, when most of the 4,322 delegates will be selected. With just weeks to go before the first votes are cast, one Democratic National Committee insider summed things up by saying, "The assumption now is that Dean will come out of Iowa and New Hampshire strong. That's not the question anymore. The question is, Who will emerge as the anti-Dean, the candidate who becomes the alternative and then fights it out with Dean in the later primaries?" The search for an anti-Dean is not entirely motivated by ideological animus and political intrigue. It's true that much of the establishment, especially those tied to the corporate-funded Democratic Leadership Council, want to avert a Dean nomination to retain party influence. But it's also true that many who want to beat Bush sincerely doubt that Dean, a hotheaded candidate who is hardly consistent in his positions and who has a penchant for highly controversial statements and actions, is up to the task. This mix of concern for self-interest and national interest holds the promise of meaningful financial and strategic support for the candidate who emerges as the anti-Dean. All of Dean's major opponents are jockeying to be that man... READ IT ALL AT: http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=17578 "RHINO'S BLOG" is the responsibility of Gary Rhine.
