THE QUOTE: If you can't say "Fuck," you can't say, "Fuck the government." - - Lenny Bruce THE HISTORY: August 14, 1966 -- London's Catholic Herald calls John Lennon's apology for his remark about the Beatles being more popular than Lenny Bruce, "arrogant." However the publication admits, as Lennon asserted, it's probably true. August 15th 1969 - - Half a million young Americans gathered at Max Yasgur's dairy farm in the Bethel hamlet of White Lake, N.Y. for the Woodstock music festival. Wavy Gravy (Hugh Romney) & the Hog Farm Crew handled security & ran a free kitchen & a "bad trips tent." Performers included Joan Baez; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Creedence Clearwater; the Grateful Dead; Jimi Hendrix; the Jefferson Airplane; Janis Joplin; Canned Heat & Ravi Shankar. A guy walks in and asks the barman,"Isn't that Bush and Powell sitting over there?" The barman says,"Yep, that's them." So the guy walks over and says, "Wow, this is a real honor. What are you guys doing in here?' Bush says, "We're planning WW III." And the guy says, "Really? What's going to happen?" Bush says, "Well, we're going to kill 140 million Iraqis this time and one blonde with big tits." The guy exclaimed, "A blonde with big tits? Why kill a blonde with big tits?" Bush turns to Powell, punches him on the shoulder and says... "See, smart ass?! I told you no one would worry about the 140 million Iraqis. RHINO HERE: Rhino's Weekend Lightening Up Blog features worth-your-while pieces from 3 Rhino's Blog readers. Here's a great follow up on the fantastic flash animated song parody on Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" featured a couple weekends back on Rhino's Blog. If you missed it, check it out at: http://www.jibjab.com/default.asp The update was sent to me by blogger & filmmaker, Eric Predoehl (E.P. to his friends) whose blog, called "E.P. Rants," is located at: http://ep-rants.blogspot.com Rhino, That JibJab "This Land is Your Land" song parody is getting a lot of attention, as it provides some bi-partisan election humor. Ludlow Music, the company that owns the rights to the original song threatened to sue the folks that created this parody. What folks might be asking is "What would Woody Guthrie think of this parody?" Now, obviously Woody's not about to make any statements right now, as he's too busy being dead, but Woody's family has an opinion on the parody, as expressed by Woody's granddaughter, Cathy at BoingBoing.net. http://www.boingboing.net/2004/08/06/cathy_guthries_opini.html From this link, I found out about Cathy's duo with Amy Nelson, whose dad is a guy named Willie. They call themselves Folk Uke, and luckily, they too have a website. When you go to the site, you can hear an adorable little song called "Shit Makes the Flowers Grow." http://www.folkuke.com And if you want to download the song directly to your computer, here's the invisible link: http://www.folkuke.com/SMTFG%20clip.mov ERIC PREDOEHL http://ep-rants.blogspot.com Here's a political musical offering from Rhino's Blog log reader Laramie Crocker whose MP3 music was featured here earlier this year. If it's good enough for Daniel Ellsberg, it's good enough for us. Give it a listen. Dear Mr. Rhine, I'm writing to let you know I have a new album out. You kindly featured my MP3 "Cargo" on your blog this year. Everyone and their mother seems to be creating political commentary these days. I'm no exception (my Hammond-B3-playing mother even appears on the album). Patricia and Daniel Ellsberg called me the "Tom Lehrer of our times, the Musical Michael Moore." Please take a moment from your busy day to listen to a song or two on the web, or hit reply and I'll send you a CD. Here is my website, where you can find the MP3's and lyrics: http://ProvisionalAuthority.us/ This is a concept album with lyrical, sweet, danceable music. It tells the story in song of an aborted election and a future ruled by the "U.S. Provisional Authority". The message is clear, but not preachy. The music is lush, rhythmic and fun. You and your readers can find all the songs, lyrics, and MP3s here for free: http://ProvisionalAuthority.us/outline.html "Far Enough" Lyrics: http://provisionalauthority.us/mp3/LaramieCrocker-FarEnough.mp3 MP3: http://www.b-rant.com/notFarEnough.html "Bombing for Peace" http://www.b-rant.com/bombingForPeace.html http://www.provisionalauthority.us/mp3/LaramieCrocker-BombingForPeace.mp3 Sincerely, Laramie Crocker (laramiec@b-rant.com) (http://b-rant.com) And finally, artist & Rhino's Blog reader Linda Bacon publishes an e-mail newsletter called, "LINKS," which offers another left leaning & left linking look at the day's current events. Here she provides perspective on this week's mocking of John Kerry by the dark father (Darth Vaderish) figure, Dick (Go Fuck Yourself) Cheney. "SEND THIS ARTICLE TO A REPUBLICAN!" Sensitivity & War by Linda Bacon, Links, 8/13/04 ----------------------------------------------------- "The first part focuses on security. I will fight this war on terror with the lessons I learned in war. I defended this country as a young man, and I will defend it as president of the United States. I believe I can fight a more effective, more thoughtful, more strategic, more proactive, more sensitive war on terror that reaches out to other nations and brings them to our side and lives up to American values in history. I lay out a strategy to strengthen our military, to build and lead strong alliances and reform our intelligence system. I set out a path to win the peace in Iraq and to get the terrorists wherever they may be before they get us." ------- John Kerry, August 5, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------- "America has been in too many wars for any of our wishes, but not a one of them was won by being sensitive". ---- Dick Cheney, August 12, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------- "We help fulfill that promise not by lecturing the world, but by leading it. Precisely because America is powerful, we must be sensitive about expressing our power and influence. Our goal is to patiently build the momentum of freedom, not create resentment for America itself. We pursue our goals, we will listen to others. We want strong friends to join us, not weak neighbors to dominate. In all our dealings with other nations, we will display the modesty of true confidence and strength." ----- George W. Bush, at USS Regan Ceremony, March 4, 2001 ----------------------------------------------------- "Now, in terms of the balance between running down intelligence and bringing people to justice obviously is -- we need to be very sensitive on that." ----- George W. Bush, at the Unity - Journalists of Color Conference, August 6, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------- [The administration asks] "our troops to go out there and be, on the one hand, very sensitive to cultural issues, on the other hand, be ready to respond in self-defense to a very ticklish situation." ------ Gen. Richard Myers, the chairman of the President Bush's Joint Chiefs of Staff, January 7, 2003 ----------------------------------------------------- "We recognize that the presence of U.S. forces can in some cases present a burden on the local community. We're not insensitive to that. We work almost on a continual basis with the local officials to remove points of friction and reduce the extent to which problems arise in terms of those relationships." ----- Dick Cheney, April 13, 2003 "RHINO'S BLOG" is the responsibility of Gary Rhine.
