QUOTE OF THE DAY
"I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity."
- - Dwight D. Eisenhower

KNOW YOUR HISTORY - November 17th
2000
-- The Florida Supreme Court froze the state's presidential tally, forbidding Secretary of State Katherine Harris from certifying results of the marathon vote count just as Republican George W. Bush was advancing his minuscule lead over Democrat Al Gore. Also, a federal appeals court refused to block recounts under way in two heavily Democratic counties. But soon, The US Supreme Court will make their selection for President.

RHINO SEZ:
In spite of the shrub gang, in spite of the ignorance (root word being ignore) of the major media, the votes are being counted in Ohio. For an update, read the article below, and/or monitor these web sites:

ELECTION RECOUNT LATEST DEVELOPMENTS - PROVISIONAL BALLOT COUNT BEGINS
by Samuel A. Stanson, The Moderate Independent, NOVEMBER 14, 2004
...the provisional ballots have begun, at last, to be counted in Ohio. County by county, the vast majority of the 155,000 provisional ballots are being accepted as legitimate, in percentages ranging from 75% to 90%, according to The Plain Dealer out of Cleveland. Just to make things seem as much like Florida last time as possible, overseas ballots were still coming in up until Friday, which means they may well have been filled out and sent after the election ended. In any case, the counting of the provisionals has begun, but rather than being the final word, this will only be the beginning, as, according to the now-combined website of Green Party candidate Cobb and Libertarian candidate Badnarik, where you can go to make a donation in support of the recount, already 1,500 people have donated. Our buddy Keith Olbermann at MSNBC reports that they have already raised about $110,000 dollars. Cobb/Badnarik say they need about $113,000 total, while Olbermann states it at about $150,000. Whichever is more accurate, it seems they are pretty certain to get it (you can make sure by dropping them a few bucks at the site above.) Once that recount is official, that will mean not only will we get to the bottom of the districts in which cute things like over 1000% of registered voters casting ballots occurred, but an additional 92,672 "spoiled" ballots - ballots which were made using that familiar old punch card technology, and so which may be valid votes but just have had a hanging chad issue - will be reviewed and, when appropriate, counted...

So General Ashcroft is on his way out. Rhino sez, in unison with millions of other Americans, "Good Riddance!" But meanwhile, the shrub wants one Alberto Gonzales to be the new Attorney General. And what is the reaction of the American public? And of our representatives? This is the man who justifies torture and calls the Geneva Accords quaint & obsolete. With his nomination as A.G., the shrub has thrown down the guantlet. Some say let's save our ammunition for the most important battles. Rhino sez, "Call your reps & tell them to passionately oppose this man who would justify torture. For more about Alberto Gonzales, read:

You may have seen the footage of the US troops killing a wounded, unarmed Iraqi which CNN et al has been playing over & over the last few days. It was shot by a video shooting & blogging war jouirnalist from California named, Kevin Sites. Surely there have been countless similar events occurring all over Iraq but we're only hearing about this one because it was caught on video. You can read about Sites in the following 2 articles check out his blog at: http://www.kevinsites.net

Marine Shooting Reporter a Battle Veteran
David Bauder, Associated Press, Nov. 16, 2004
Video of a U.S. Marine shooting a wounded man in Fallujah was captured by an Internet Age journalist who often reports and photographs war stories, then posts his impressions on his own weblog. Kevin Sites, a freelancer who works part time for NBC News, was being kept under wraps by the network Tuesday as the investigation into the shooting continued. The youthful, long-haired Sites has worked for NBC, CNN and ABC News and has covered war zones in Afghanistan and Colombia. He had extensive experience in Iraq, where he was embedded with a Marines unit during the operation in Fallujah...

At Home in the War Zone
Rogue reporter Kevin Sites has driven through minefields, been under mortar and machine-gun fire, and survived a highly-publicized capture in Iraq. So why does he keep going back?...

Finally, Rhino's Bottom Line consists of 2 articles on the theme, "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!"

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

Former G.I.s Ordered to War, Fight Not to Go
By Monica Davey, New York Times, November 16 2004
The Army has encountered resistance from more than 2,000 former soldiers it has ordered back to military work, complicating its efforts to fill gaps in the regular troops.  Many of these former soldiers - some of whom say they have not trained, held a gun, worn a uniform or even gone for a jog in years - object to being sent to Iraq and Afghanistan now, after they thought they were through with life on active duty.  They are seeking exemptions, filing court cases or simply failing to report for duty, moves that will be watched closely by approximately 110,000 other members of the Individual Ready Reserve, a corps of soldiers who are no longer on active duty but still are eligible for call-up...

These Unseen Wounds Cut Deep
By Esther Schrader, Los Angeles Times, November 14, 2004
...A mental health crisis is emerging, with one in six returning soldiers afflicted, experts say....A study by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research found that 15.6% of Marines and 17.1% of soldiers surveyed after they returned from Iraq suffered major depression, generalized anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder - a debilitating, sometimes lifelong change in the brain's chemistry that can include flashbacks, sleep disorders, panic attacks, violent outbursts, acute anxiety and emotional numbness.  Army and Veterans Administration mental health experts say there is reason to believe the war's ultimate psychological fallout will worsen...
