TWO QUOTES:
"I'm aware of the Amnesty International report, and it's absurd"
- - U.S. President George W. Bush, May 31, 2005
"What is 'absurd' is President Bush's attempt to deny the deliberate
policies of his Administration, which has detained individuals without
charge or trial in prisons at Guantanamo Bay, Bagram Air Base and other
locations. What is 'absurd' and indeed outrageous is the Bush Administration's
failure to undertake a full independent investigation, and that completed
reports into human rights violations in these prisons remain classified
and unseen. The network of secret detention centers operated by the US
around the world must be opened to scrutiny by independent human rights
groups and those responsible for torture, no matter how senior, must
be held accountable. It is also worth noting that this administration
never finds it 'absurd' when we criticize Cuba, China, or when we condemned
the violations in Iraq under Saddam Hussein."
- - Dr. William F. Schulz, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA,
(In Response to President Bush - May 31, 2005)

RHINO HERE:
The Rhino just isn’t in the mood for humor this weekend, even sarcasim. The
folks at Amnesty International have been courageously jousting with the shrub
gang this week regarding the publication of their annual report on human rights & I think
all of us who care about such things should be standing up & supporting them
in any way we can.
I’ve collected several key links to quickly bring you up to date, & MOST
IMPORTANTLY, to an Amnesty petition entitled the, “Denounce Torture: Stop
It Now!” initiative. AI USA hopes that at least 250,000 people living in
the US will sign a special statement which they will use to show the Bush Administration,
Congress & others that Americans are strongly opposed to torture and ill-treatment
in all circumstances. The Rhino urges you to sign the petition, then use the
handy 2nd link to get your friends & cohorts to sign it too.
Amnesty International Annual Report
Americas Regional Overview 2004
...The blatant disregard for international human rights and humanitarian
law in the “war on terror” continued to make a mockery of President
George Bush’s claims that the USA was the global champion of human rights.
Images of detainees in US custody tortured in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq shocked
the world. War crimes in Iraq, and mounting evidence of the torture and ill-treatment
of detainees in US custody in other countries, sent an unequivocal message to
the world that human rights may be sacrificed ostensibly in the name of security... READ

our petition letter and show the U.S. Administration, Congress, and others that
those living in the United States are strongly opposed to torture and ill-treatment
in all circumstances.
