Java and the Five Eights. [The .NET Guy]

Java has taken a bit of a pounding lately with the revelation that one survey shows average J2EE application availability was 88%. Yes, that's right... 20 hours of downtime per 7-day week. Rick Ross takes and honest look at what's going on....

If these are truly distributed systems, w/ database and legacy/mainframe access, messenging/rpc's, etc, you'd expect a lowest common denominator uptime. But, I've seen other surveys that suggest that most EJB or app-server deployed applications are significantly over-engineered, and have uptime requirements that could more reliably be addressed with POJO's and a load balancer.
