The Many-To-Many crew have been meta-discussing "Social Software"--why now, why that particular phrase, etc.?
My 2 cents: let's admit that it is really about Socio-Technology or perhaps "Techno-Social engineering".
And this leads to a hypothesis about "why now"? Because most of us have seen a world economy rise and then crash over these same technologies...only to realize that the hard problems are social rather than technological. As engineers and inventors, we try to use technology to address the big problems. We've now recognized the Big Problem. We're trying to create (and become) part of the solution.
