"Explain this to me one more time." Buffy said, frowning at her appearance in the mirror. She'd darkened her hair with some temporary dye that would wash out in the morning. And if it didn't, she was about due to lighten it to her preferred shade of blonde anyway. "Who am I supposed to be?"
"River Tam." Willow said, carefully arranging her shawl. "She's sort of like a slayer. She fights these evil creatures called Reevers. Her brother rescued her from the evil government that was doing experiments on her and they're hiding out on a space ship."
"And who are you supposed to be?" Buffy asked, watching her best friend dress up like some Indian princess from one of those late night movies. She suspected Willow wasn't telling her everything but she'd been too busy to look into it.
"Inara Serra. She's sort of like a geisha. She rents space on the ship." Willow said.
"Geisha? Isn't that Japanese for..." Buffy waved her hands around vaguely, not sure how to put her thoughts into words without upsetting her.
"For what?" Willow turned and stared at her for a moment. "No! Geisha are nothing like that. And neither is Inara."
"Okay..." Buffy said. "And why isn't Xander dressing up as a character from this show, this 'Firefly' thing?"
"Because he won the bet." Willow said. "He got to pick our characters."
"And why did we let that happen?" Buffy asked, though she really didn't need the reminder.
"He needed the moral boost?" Willow mumbled.
"The next time he needs the moral boost..." Buffy told her firmly, "let's buy him pizza instead. Even for Halloween this really isn't me." She tugged at the slightly baggy, shapeless dress. Sure, it'd been cheap, no one else apparently wanting to dress up as a character from some cancelled show about cowboys in space, but it wasn't going to impress Angel like the fancy dress she'd originally had her eye on. At least the axe thing this space slayer girl carried around wasn't ugly.
