Charles comments on IBM's "foray back into the software biz." Actually IBM never left the software biz - their J2EE Websphere environment is quite robust and is a good enterprise level development and production environment.
What IBM's new offering is, is a foray back into office productivity software. And they've taken an interesting approach. It looks as if their "office aps" (word processing, spreadsheets, etc) will be server based. This means no software installation at each and every PC. Instead a portal approach will be utilized. That has a certain appeal to enterprises - which of course are the folks that own Websphere. If IBM's product is good (very good) and could seamlessly exchange Microsoft files, it might have a chance.
I would be very interested in taking a peek at this product. I'd love to know what a portal based word processor looks like. I've done a fair amount of portal investigation in the past and am a huge fan of J2EE. I'm intrigued by the concept. But it definitely runs the danger of putting a tutu on an elephant with the expectation of an exquisite pas de duex.
And Charles - the permalink to this entry on your blog did not work. And when are comments coming?!
