From my family friend, Steve Turner:
The book I have is The Timeless Way of Building by Christopher Alexander. This is the book that got the whole patterns mania going, even though it has nothing to do with computers or software. It's about architecture. But, the thought processes are explained and they can be ascribed to most any discipline. As I recall, the first real patterns book was Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, John Vlissides. Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software. Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series, Addison-Wesley, Reading Mass.1994. It's usually listed as authored by Gamma, et al. There are no doubt multitudes of patterns books out now, but this was the first.
