The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures - serves as the "international" metrology institute and publishes the definitive international reference on the SI. The metric system starts with the definition of the metre and the kilogram in 1799. Gauss, Maxwell, Thompson, Giorgi and various institutions all do their bit along the way, and eventually we arrive at: a set of seven base units (metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, candela) and a set of derived units (newton, watt, tesla etc).
Two other metrological organisations: The International Electrical Commission develops international standards for electrotechnology. And the International Organisation for Standardization develops international standards pretty much everywhere else.
