Never Going To Be The Same

"I think this is all going to work out ok," he said from the front seat of the car.

We were all silent for a moment. No one said anything.

"Well, I certainly hope it does, but I don't think it will," I said from the back seat.

And I proceeded to give him my view of what the current crash means with regard to our "consumer driven economy" and how that behavior isn't going to return and how there isn't anything left in our economy to replace the consumer ever-willing to take on more debt for just one more gadget and a shiny brand new car.

And I continued with my view that although oil prices have fallen from their recent highs, this is only a breathing period, an undeserved grace period if you will, before the new regime permanently kicks in -- a regime that puts an end to our motoring ways and gives new meaning to food on the table.

He was quiet for a moment in response to my grim response to his sunny optimism.

"You guys really believe that, don't you?" he said.

Yes, we really do. It's never going to be the same again.
