Missing the Speech

Just as the President began to speak, the phone rang.

"Hi dad."

"Ben! How are you doing?"

I'd been expecting this call for quite a while.

I am having such a good time at college. ...

My room isn't messy, although mom probably wouldn't agree. ...

I am making lots of new friends. ...

The dorm can get kind of loud, but I have your wonderful gift of sound isolating earbuds and some calm orchestral music to listen to. ...

I'm trying not to get in the habit of doing fun things on weeknights. If I give myself an inch, it might become a habit. ...

We talked for almost an hour. He told me about his classes. He told me about working as kitchen coordinator in the food co-op. He told me about signing up to be a bike mechanic in the bike co-op in the basement of Keep Cottage. He talked about how his Spanish TA said they're just going to work on conversation in the lab class. He talked about reading Plato and how they are starting to get into the gushy, mushy, controversial stuff in his First Amendment and the Internet seminar. He talked about going to a lecture by Amory Lovins. He talked about his Tango class.

And after he talked about all those things, he said he had to go. Just as the President was finishing.
