Afternoon in the Shade

I sat in the shade under the eaves of the house. It was hot in the sun, but it was cool in the shade since a breeze was blowing out of the south. I leaned back in my chair, put my feet up, and fell asleep.

A Red-Bellied Woodpecker tree woke me. It hopped along mostly upside down, drilling at the branches of the Ash tree, periodically looking down at me. I didn't move.

A Hummingbird flew in to stake his claim, but the Woodpecker ignored him, hopping away repeatedly, until the Hummingbird gave up and returned to its perch in the Live Oak tree and finally flew off.

I closed my eyes, relished the breeze against my face, and fell back asleep.
