How new technologies are modifying our way of life

The City of Paris is organizing for the first tile a Sleepless Night (Nuit Blanche). This art festival will start on October 5 at 7:22pm and end the next morning around noon.

More than 40 different initiatives will be scattered among 32 unexpected locations in Paris.

One of them will be the Tower T2 of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

Here is a picture of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

The Arcade team, from the Project Blinkenlights in Germany, will transform this tower for about two weeks into a giant computer screen.

With a matrix of 20 x 26 windows (resulting in 520 directly addressable pixels) and a size of 3370m2, the Arcade installation is positioned to be world's biggest computer screen ever.

And I bet it probably will hold another world record for the biggest pixels: about six square meters!

Here is what the tower will look.

The installation starts on September 25th, 2002 running eleven nights until the official Nuit Blanche happening at October 5th/6th. During this time span, the installation will present an ever-changing kaleidoscope of animations and interactive applications.

And guess what will be one of these applications? Tetris, you're right.

Arcade promotes a new series of classic computer games to run on the building, allowing everybody to play games on the building with his mobile phone. Among others, the all-time favorite pixel puzzle game Tetris can be played using nothing but a mobile phone.

So, if you are in Paris during these two weeks, you'll be able to pilot this giant display with your cell phone. Amazing, isn't?

Details on the different events are still scarce. They should be available on the official server of Paris at http://www.paris.fr/.

A dedicated site, at http://www.nuitblanche.paris.fr/, currently offline, should be available soon.

I wish you're lucky enough to be there and have fun.
