Joe C. Carson: Turncoats. While I'm hardly influential, I'm a pro-Windows type and I've toyed with the idea of going Mac for years, but was always held back by the OS. Now that there's real memory protection and a unix shell, I keep thinking about taking the plunge. I switched one of my work machines to XP a couple weeks ago and I've been really underwhelmed. A question: since OS X is based upon Mach, which is based on BSD, will Rotor run on OS X? Strangely enough, in college, I did all my work on Unix machines, partly because I didn't have a computer of my own for most of college, and partly because I assumed that I'd be working on Unix systems after graduation. So I graduated and ended up with a job doing Windows programming. I used to have some Unix skills, but they're long gone. 3:25:30 PM permalink

My employer was recently named one of the 100 best places to work in IT by Computerworld (specifically #73). So what's it like to work for one of the 100 best? Let's put it this way: I've never said I love my job so much I'd do it if I wasn't paid. I will say that as I'm closing in on 4 1/2 years there, I'm over double my previous record for staying at a job. I've had several good offers to go elsewhere, and I'm still there. I recently noticed David Mc Cusker's disclaimer on his weblog about his employer. I don't know that working for Galileo biases my opinions (other than that I think GDS bypass is a bad thing for my paycheck, so support your local Apollo or Galileo powered travel agency!), but I've been hesitant to associate myself with them here. Part of this is because I got in some trouble several years ago for mentioning a product under development on a mailing list. But part of this is that I don't particularly want to be associated with Galileo in these pages. 4:54:16 AM permalink
