Daniel Diermeier and Tim Fedderson are working on an initiative that has a close relationship to Knowledge Management. The product is called Ayeware and the original feature of it is that it has highly sophisticated mechanisms for making decisions which include numerous options for voting and making proposals. This is interesting because as more "knowledge" floats around on-line, this knowledge needs to be used to make decisions. However, the decision making process in an asynchronous on-line environment is considerably different than a face-to-face environment and many new challenges emerge which leave users frustrated and disenchated with software. As it turns out, the problems aren't solely with the software, but rather with the lack of sound procedures and best practices for dealing with the differences of on-line decision making. There appears to be an enormous training opportunity around this concept of "on-line decision making". The potential efficiency gains are enormous but the hurdles are huge as well.
