Weekend lecture: Web News... and Olds
Something old...
For digital culture and online journalism students. See this:
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/9612.html
It's one of the most concise explanations of how writing for the Web is more than a little bit like writing for newspapers. And it's by someone with a Ph.D. who admits he wasn't taught to write like that. If you haven't stumbled on the article before, please read it now (or reread it) before you start work on your next project.
Also follow two links in the article to read these:
1. The abstract of Mindy McAdams' article
http://www.sentex.net/~mmcadams/invent.html,
plus her "the newspaper metaphor" link.
2. The short Sam Meddis article from USA Today
http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/ccarch/cc0415.htm
Notice that those two links of Jakob's are still working after six years! It's great that both Professor McAdams and USA Today keep such things in place -- something more people and institutions should do with well-produced Web information when they can.
Something new... I was very disappointed this week when a redesign at http://Poynter.org trashed a lot of my existing bookmarks to the site. If you're interested in Web design, the online discussion at Poynter is worth a look while people are debating the changes there.
The site was so big that they decided they needed a database system behind the current and future pages. As a bonus, the new system also lets them register readers, who now can contribute to online forums under their "true names" or Poynter-specific IDs. That's very nice, but I wish someone had figured out a way to keep the old archive addresses working at the same time.
Maybe I should move this Weblog and my school pages to http://www.stepno.com for safe keeping!
