Text-Messaging for Breaking News

Text messaging (SMS) on mobile phones isn't as big in the U.S. as it is in some parts of the world, but it's clearly not just for kids passing notes in class. The recent examples below are from the Smart Mobs weblog ("mob" as in "mobile" in this case)...

SMS coverage of May 10 elections in the Philippines.

In the Philippines, six media networks and technology firms have just formalized their partnership for multimedia coverage of the upcoming May 10 elections, reports Inq7.net.

Information gathered through reports from Broadcast network GMA-7's TV and radio coverage and the Philippine Daily Inquirer will be delivered via the Internet and through SMS.

Results of Turkish elections by SMS.

Next Sunday's Turkish election results will be broadcasted by text messaging, reports Zaman Online.
Cihan News Agency
has reached an agreement with Aria, Aycell, Telsim and Turkcell to allow the broadcasting of Election results by SMS".

The local election results - for an estimated 3,300 candidates seeking election as mayors and local councillors in Turkey - will be sent via SMS after polls have closed in the cities and counties where the elections will be held.
