The Vanishing Newspaper: Survival and Public Service in the Age of We Media The future of newspapers -- as a business and as a public service -- is the topic of a webcast at 2 p.m. Wednesday, from the Media Center of the American Press Institute. I hope to stop in (online) between classes to catch up with Philip Meyer at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Phil wrote Precision Journalism, the first journalism book I ever read that mentioned computers -- almost 20 years before I got a chance to sit in his classroom. The conference borrows the title and theme of his lastest book, The Vanishing Newspaper, and invites participants to join in, through polls and by posting questions and comments during the event. That fits with the other half of the discussion's title.
