Michael "No Silence Here" Silence, resident blogger at the News Sentinel, has started building a list of Knoxville-area bloggers, something I've been curious about myself. The comment section of that linked item is the blog-collection box, so if you're here (Knoxville) and not there (on the list), why not sign in? Michael plans to do something with that list next week. If he's said what, I've missed it...

But, no, despite that teasing yellow-journalism headline I don't think this is some insidious plot by the conglomerate mainstream media to round up the grassroots bloggers because of some perceived threat or rivalry... Actually, the growing number of local bloggers might enjoy some kind of round-up, organization, celebration, or at least a pizza -- if we're not all too busy at the keyboard. If the News Sentinel will pick up the check, all the better! :-)

Could call for a lot of pizza: "Can't swing a dead cat and not hit a blogger in Knoxville," says Uncle, who prompted Michael to clarify that his list will extend outside the city limits, even to "those questionable bloggers from Blount County." Of course no-cost memberships are already available in the Rocky Top Brigade, a broader collection of bloggers in the state or from the state... That's what the membership guidelines say, but there might be a few folks with deep feelings about the state tucked away on the list... even though it's technically not enough to just be a fan of Elvis, Dolly, B.B. or Tennessee Ernie -- or carry a picture of Andrew Jackson in your wallet. Alas, the RTB blogroll -- 144 names by today's count -- doesn't say which Tennessee city each member calls, or once called, home, so Michael Silence (or UT faculty and students) can't pull togehter a Knoxville list from there.

Membership benefits? Members get to fly the original RTB banner or its new compact counterpart on their blogs, gather in virtual tailgate parties, be part of the blogroll (loading all those names on your own page is optional), and have their most recent posts aggregated on the brigade page, among other things.
