The UT School of Journalism & Electronic Media has put together its annual "JEM Week" of panel discussions with its faculty and visiting media industry folks for April 19-21. I wasn't in on the planning, but awoke to find myself not only on an "Online News" panel, but with the note "expert on blogs" added to my name.
Yikes.
I'm told the panel discussions are all open to the public, so I hope a few Rocky Top Brigadiers and KnoxViewsers can make it. Since two-way communication is one thing journalism pros and profs should be thinking about, some blogger voices from "the former 'audience'" would be a great addition.
That panel is Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the U.T. Black Cultural Center's Multipurpose Room 103-104. (The building is in the middle of campus, on Melrose Avenue next to Hess Hall, which is next to Hodges Library.)

Regional media heavyweights from Scripps and the News Sentinel are on most of the panels during the week. Jack Lail, managing editor for multimedia at the News Sentinel and Katie Allison Granju from http://WATE.com are on the "online news" panel with (me and) Jim Stovall, who founded the online newspaper "Dateline Alabama" while teaching at UA. Stovall -- http://jprof.com -- is a UTK PhD, has written textbooks about online journalism, newswriting and infographics, and is coming here in the fall to fill an endowed chair. The panel moderator will be the school's acting director, Sam Swan, who is just back from an international broadcast-education trip, advising a journalism school in Jordan and a television network in Bulgaria.
