Carpe diem, carpe diem. There are movies that stay with you for years after you see them. Heart of the Sea : Kapolioka'ehukai (see entry 2 below) is one of them. Rell Sun, amazing surfer, diver, youth mentor, community organizer, lover of sports, and single mother. She was beautiful, graceful, wise and articulate. One of the handful of women who were surfing at the time. A pioneer in so many ways. What a contrast: her daily surfing in the sea to the harsh cold hospital rooms she went to for cancer treatments.
I wish this movie would show in theaters everywhere. I know in Waikiki it premiered to 6,000 people. I saw it in San Francisco, at the Castro Theater. Wow. Thanks to NoNoGirl for inviting me to this. |

radio tierra--la primera radio de mujeres en latino america at work today the general manager of radio tierra, a radio station in chile run by women, came to visit. perla talked a lot about the climate of repression from the government and catholic church. they work with grassroots organizations, train them in radio skills, and then give them air time. one of the programs has helped to organize women who do piece work (sewing clothes) for corporations from their homes. normally these women are isolated. and it's hard to find enough people (25 is the minimum) to be a part of a union in the climate of fear. but through the radio program, they were able to reach out and communicate with women to form a union. Now the women have a forum for their concerns and the power to fight for their rights. 5:14:22 PM comment [] ![]() |
