Gyro. This just came in on the DOTNET-CLR list.  A beta implementation of generics for C#. [System.Error.Emit]

"Apple has released their Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) Technote chock-full of useful information about the API and technical changes in Jaguar. [...] including the idea of storing kernel panic info in NVRAM and writing it to a logfile on reboot." [Slashdot article, emphasis added]

Okay, here's the feature description:

Kernel panic information is now recorded in NVRAM and at the next system startup that information is written to the /Library/Logs/panic.log. This allows panics to be reported without the inconvenience of having to write down the information or copy the information from the screen by some other means.

NT BSOD's didn't always save to disk (but this did), but at least you almost always got an event log entry with some type of message/address, right? And now, you'll get a mini/complete memory dump if you want one. (Incidentally, I haven't seen a BSOD since I replaced my bad 128 mb sdram.)

I suspect I'm not getting something: I don't usually deal with hardware and kernels. Sweet C# code... What am I missing here?

I was going to complain about how this ad violates the spirit of the Microsoft Agent, but then I realized that, a long time ago, in a city far away, I wrote this page.

I don't know whether or not the product they're advertising works, but it reminds me a lot of SoftRam for some reason.

Incidentally, that FTC page is pretty funny:

Both before and after the introduction of Windows 95, considerable notice was taken by prospective purchasers of the fact that Windows 95 and applications sold for use with it would be particularly "memory hungry," requiring at least eight megabytes of RAM and preferably 16.
It's not clear from the context whether or not that's 8 - 16 per application, or for the OS + applications (anyone remember?)... Windows Media Player playing "Monkey vs. Robot", a 4 mb WMV, is taking up 17 mb of memory by itself on Win2K right now.
