Growing up, I always ate wheat bread (and creamy peanut butter, incidentally) because that was the only thing my mom would ever buy. Now, I buy the cheapest, most nutritionally devoid white bread I can find (and crunchy peanut butter).

I think my mom's strategy backfired over the long term: sure, I ate white bread for 14 - 16 years, but I'll probably stick with white bread for much longer than that. That being said, I still feel guilty for buying white bread, so, maybe she did win.
