Doggin' up a dog-friendly vacation at the beach ... MD It's easy to get frustrated when you're scratching around (on the web) for a decent dog-friendly vacation at the beach. A few good bones out there include:

  • Places That Welcome Pooches, Pussycats VA The latest edition of the book,Great Vacations for You & Your Dog USA, 2003-04, is out. We ordered it even though we didn't really need it to find a great vacation rental at the beach... just go to www.google.com and search for "beach vacation dog", plus your desired location, as in "Dewey Beach"  and voila... you've got some great leads! Petswelcome.com
  • Dewey Beach Prepares for greyhound gathering MD/DE [AP Press] If you're going to the annual greyhound gathering, book your rooms now. Almost all the dog-friendly hotels in the area are booked up for the weekend of October 11 (alas for us).
  • High-Tech Travel Planning  Booking Last Minute: A Primer [Washington Post] Michael Shapiro has written the definitive guide to travel planning on the web. I tested all of his strategies, including downloading Sidestep, a travel program you integrate with Internet Explorer... I didn't turn up any great deals with Sidestep, and I ended up removing it with Spy Bot after I ran Ad-aware and found 11 keys relating to the installation ... You may have better results than I did...
  • More strategies to find that perfect vacation spot for a bargain price [Washington Post]
  • I found that Vacation Rentals by Owner, MD also turned up some great condos which rent at reasonable prices to pet owners. Vacations Rentals by Owner includes sites for all 50 states as well...
  • Don't forget to check out petswelcome.com
  • The AAA's 5th edition of Traveling with your pet (~$16) rates 10,000+ pet friendly hotels. You don't have to purchase a membership to buy the book, either.
  • The best strategy for the best rate for my search included going to the web site for the condo or hotel, taking note of the rates, and then actually phoning the hotel to find out if they had better rates! If you want the best rates, be sure to ask for rates for all the memberships and groups you qualify for: AAA, AARP, Government, car rental associations, etc. One of those may just cut your rental fees in half! It did for us (heh heh)

Happy vacationing with your pooch.... Dog News is back... until we take the dogs on vacation
