In Radioland's referrer log (a very cool feature of the Radioland package), a very strange referral to Dog News popped up: 1st-for-dogs.com has a feature called Gruesome dog attack pictures. Luckily, I always surf with images turned off: I don't want to see any gruesome photos, no matter how educational they may be. I was surprised to see Dog News listed as a resource on that page... No such pictures will ever appear here...

After our dog's surgery and aftercare, I'm ready to fall down and worship our veterinarian and his staff. I had no idea how hard it was to take care of a recuperating dog. So far, I've been really inefficient and inept. Of course, not sleeping for a week has made me stupid (taking care of the dog at night; just when I fall into a deep sleep, the dog has to go out, etc... ) After this little experience, I know it's the guardian/owners and not the dogs who are the major obstacle for a dog's recovery. Sometimes I think the hardest part of a vet's job is dealing with the stupid humans; animals are much more obedient.

Phoney dietary supplements  bilk dog owners Consumer Labs recently tested and reviewed dietary supplements, including MSM products, chondroitin, and glucosamine, for effectiveness. Guess what? Pet supplements, especially those all-in-one combo kind, often do NOT contain the ingredients they are touted for. '...Pet owners seem particularly at risk for getting ripped off.' -- Ted Cooperman, president of Consumer Lab.[ConsumerLab.com] Don't worry if you purchased Cosequin Doublestrength: it's certified as Approved.

bummer... I wonder if that human version of joint supplement I bought for myself via a pet supply company is any good.

In the last two weeks, we've had a string of armed robberies of pedestrians in our neighborhood. I've never been approached...  and if I was, I'd gladly hand over doggie bags full of poo (two pounders). I also dress down when I walk the dogs, so much so that a Pepco repairman asked me if I was going to hit him up for money... of course not, I replied and hurried off with both dogs in tow...

That left me a little shaken... geez... that bad, huh. I decided then and there my dog had to stop using my clothes closet as his private den. His daily two hour meditations in it gave him equanimity, but now my belongings waft with the scent of wet dog. So I purchased a giant 'dr. scholls' type deodorizer pad and placed it on the floor in the middle of my closet. Our chow doesn't deign to nap in the closet anymore; he's moved two feet to the front of my closet, with his head just inside, waiting for the day I'll relent and remove the pad, so he can once again enjoy his private hideaway. When he isn't meditating, he's out in the back yard creating a zen garden by removing the grass and raking the resulting mud with his nails...

Our other dog goes bonkers when I put her in a crate (we're supposed to restrict her while she's healing).  So I've got her curled up at my feet, sound asleep, out of her hated crate. This can't go on... She was only in it for half an hour this morning (so I could walk our other chow), just enough time to give herself a yucky sore on her little nose and poop up the crate... (and she had just pooped, prior to going into the crate). We're going to to try placing her in a small room, instead.

Dog sitters are a sought after breed...  Yesterday, I phoned a business whose ad appeared in the petloverscompanion.com quarterly digest. When I asked about a 2 hour inhome visit, she said: 'yes, but do you have a TV and a couch?' Yes, I did, I assured her. She said she'd be over and hung up! I dialed her back immediately and asked for her references, so I could check them... She hung up on me... phew... that was a close call...  No matter what the ad says, it pays to interview over the phone.
