Back in the '50s my father worked at JPL (now part of NASA, but then run by CalTech). First he tested missiles with Wernher von Braun. Then he got into satellites, and worked on Explorer 1, the first U.S. satellite, which discovered the van Allen belts.
Check out the photo attached to Phil's blog post: Pickering was head of JPL, van Allen's in the middle, von Braun on the end. See those little antennae poking out the side of the satellite? My dad told them the antennae weren't necessary (he developed the low-power microwave transmitter), and would make the satellite wobble. They put antennae on anyway, and Explorer wobbled.
