I got to try out Optimaze these last couple weeks and so far I think it is awesome. Where I see it most beneficial? devices! You have a small screen which you cannot pick out imperfect detail which means you can optimize it intensely. It is also perfect because you have a device that probably has less space than you have ram. I was able to download some fairly large cartoons made for pocket pc and compress them to be fairly SMALL. This is awesome for those tons of people who make cartoons for the pocket pc. It also did fairly well on some applications for the pocket pc. It allows you to really tweak things by controlling not only curve optimizations but straight as well.

The good things:

1. As a device fan this tool simply rocks for bringing down the file size so much.
2. It allows you to optimize frame by frame if you wish!
3. Awesome live feed back on what is optimized, how much it is optimized, and how big the file is.
4. You can switch between the optimized one and the original with one click.
5. You can zoom in and out very smoothly with your mouse.
6. You can actually browse the symbols from your library and optimize those. (This is my favorite feature) - this allows you to some really direct optimizations.
7. You can have symbols inherit optimizations from their parent, or just use their own!
8. You can edit in a UI that shows the size of the frames, how much they are optimized and you can also selectively optimize several frames at once.
9. You can output Flash 3,4,5 or 6.
10. The whole UI is in Flash!
I could keep going, seriously.

The bad things:

1. When optimizing movies with Flash 6 widgets the optimizations greatly affected the quality.
2. It didn't always seem completely correct on file size.

Summary:

I love this product. When you first open it only a few features are apparent. But as you dig in you find tons of new features. The UI runs smoothly and is built in Flash. If you do a lot of cartoons (especially if they are for devices) then this is invaluable. If you are working on applications it may not optimize a lot of widget type controls well, but thats ok because you can selectively optimize symbols in your library...so your loading animation or that interactive help with a lot of animation, they can all be optimized and greatly increase the speed of the download!
