 Hawaii Ocean Film Festival announces 2005 winners 
This years winners in the categories of Marine Resources, Ocean Recreation, and our Cultural Connections to the Sea, were announced this week at the opening night festivities on Kauai. Taking top honors in Ocean Recreation is "Wave of Compassion," the documentary on Surf-Aid International's effort to bring medical and dental care to some of the most remote places on earth. Filmed by Justin Crumb, the 10 day mission through Sumatra and the Mentawai?s featured some of the world?s best surfers-  Dave Rastovich, Strider, Keith Malloy, and  Ben Bourgeois. Gavin ***** won for his short film "Two Mo bettah' in this category, and special honors were afforded 19 year old Timmy Hamilton for his excellent water work in the ABC production of "Surfer Girl 2 - the Comeback Kid."  
"Healthy Oceans, Healthy Humans," by Kathleen Frith won for Marine Resources Short, and the stand-out of the evening was "Na Kohola o Hanalei," a documentary on the Hanalei Canoe Club and Native Hawaiians who saved  200 whales from a mass stranding. This is the first documentary for Joel Guy, better known for his surf films "Crossing the Line," and Tamba TV.  
The top ten films of the festival will travel state-wide, playing each island this fall. Those films  
that will accompany the winners are: the winning student film, "Niue-This is your Land," by New Zealands' Mella Lahina,  "Kamea" by Jennifer Akana-Sturla, Hawakbill Babies at Makena, One Winter Story, and Wa'a Ho'olaulea.  
A selection of short films and sneek previews will be shown at Hale'iwa's Sunset on the Beach this July 23rd and 24th. This 2 day event draws over 20,000 people per day to the North Shore of Oahu's Ali'i Beach Park. For more info http://www.oceanfilmfestival.com
