New iPods play video; iTunes offers TV shows and music videos. BY SOCRATES MAUPIN. VENICE (CINEMA MINIMA) — Apple’s latest iPod models play video as well as music. Music videos, and TV shows from the Walt Disney Company and from the American TV network ABC (which is owned by Disney) can downloaded from Apple’s iTunes online shop for play on the iPod. The new iPods will play H.264 video in 320-pixel by 240-pixel resolution, at 30 frames per second, with stereo audio. They will play MPEG-4 video in 480-pixel by 480-pixel resolution at 30 frames per second, with stereo audio. The two latest iPod models have hard disks which can hold 30 gigabytes or 60 gigabytes of data. The 60-gigabyte model can hold 150 hours of video, according to Apple’s estimate, assuming the video has been compressed using the H.264 method, running at 750 kilobytes per second, with 128 kilobyte-per-second audio. However, the iPod battery can play only three hours of video, before needing to be re-charged, according to Apple. QuickTime 7 Pro can be used to export home movies to iTunes, for transfer to the iPod. An accessory Universal Dock includes an S-video port to connect the iPod to a TV to play video or photo slideshows.
