Anniversary of the Navajo Treaty
Navajo Treaty Signing Celebration - June 1 - 3. It's time to celebrate your sovereignty. Phoenix--The Navajo Language Program at the Phoenix Indian Center and the Arizona Native Scene newspaper will be hosting several events June 1, 2, and 3, 2006 at the Phoenix Indian Center relating to the anniversary of the signing of the Navajo Treaty with the United States Government on June 1, 1868. Events are open to all Native people in the Phoenix metro area. The Phoenix Dine', Inc. and Pima Awards and Promotional Products, Inc. are also sponsors. On Thursday, June 1st at noon, a speech will be given by Dr. Peterson Zah, former Navajo Nation President and current Assistant to the ASU Dean and video presentations about the Long Walk of the Navajos and the Navajo Clan System will taken place immediately following the noon presentation at the center. On Friday, June 2nd at 6 PM, Freddie Johnson, Navajo Language Instructor at the Phoenix Indian Center will give a presentation about the importance of the Navajo language and there will be a mini-concert with Navajo funny man, Vincent Craig, as known as Mutton Man. Veterans from all tribes are invited to this free concert. Call Freddie Johnson at the Phoenix Indian Center at 602-236-1017 for more information about the presentations on June 1 and 2. On Saturday evening, June 3rd at 5:30 PM a Native American Baby Contest open to all tribes will be held at the courtyard of the Phoenix Indian Center. The contest will be held for two categories only: 1) from newborn to 24 months; and 2) over 24 months up to 48 months (UNDER 4-years of age; ages 4 and up not eligible). Prizes will be given to all entries and trophies and other prizes for 1st through 3rd in each category. Registration will be at 5:30 PM at the Indian Center and the program will begin at 6:30 PM. There is no charge for registration. Call Loren Tapahe at 602-448-0260 for information about the baby contest. All events are open to the public and will be held at the Phoenix Indian Center, located at 2601 N. 3rd Street, Phoenix. There is no charge for any of the events. Vendors are welcome on Friday and Saturday nights; a fee of $10 per vendor will be charged per night; and vendors need to bring their own table and chairs. [NYM's News]
