World Premiere of Dana Brown's New Surf Film 'Highwater'
Crests the Santa Monica Pier May 22, 2009
May 14, 2009 (Cardiff by the Sea, CA) The world premiere of "Highwater," Dana Brown's feature film set against the backdrop of
Oahu's North Shore during an epic winter season, will screen to the
public as a benefit for the Centennial Celebration of the famous Santa
Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California on May 22nd. This is the first
time that the film will be seen in its final form, in its entirety.
"Highwater" tells an inspiring story of competitors and non-competitors
drawn to the spectacle of the North Shore during the Van's Triple Crown
of Surfing held each year in Hawaii for the last 6 weeks of the year as
waves mount to unimaginable size and power. Over the course of 55 days
every year, these fierce contests turn the fabled Oahu location on its
ear as thousands of surfers, followers, and media descend upon it for
some of the world's most stunning waves and high-performance surfing.
Brown chronicles the events and brings the audience into close contact
with the power of the ocean, athleticism, and devotion of those who
call it their playground. "Highwater" is a story of triumph, tragedy,
and brotherhood. As in his other films, "Step Into Liquid" and "Dust To
Glory," Brown gives the audience the humor as well as the humanity of
the situation, skillfully bringing the surfers and their families
vividly to the forefront of the story.
"Highwater" features
appearances by superstars, icons, journeymen, and up and comers young
and old from the world of pro surfing including Kelly Slater, Rochelle
Ballard, Sunny Garcia, Pancho Sullivan, Chelsea Georgeson, Jon Jon
Florence, Sophia Milanovich, Mark Healey, and Jamie Sterling, as well
as some unfamiliar new faces with compelling personal stories from the
North Shore. The soundtrack for "Highwater"features performances by Jake Shimabukuro, Switchfoot, Steve Sommers,
Slightly Stupid, Matt Coasta, The Mother Hips, Rodrigo y Gabriela,
Xavier Rudd, Ryan Ferguson, Wolfmother, Dylan Donkin, Billy Shaddox and
composer Phil Marhsall.
With producer C. Rich Wilson, Dana
Brown has brought audiences two of the most heart pounding, emotionally
engaging action sports films ever made, "Step Into Liquid," and "Dust
To Glory." The filmmakers launched Apostrophe Films in 2005 to continue
their passion for the genre and the chance to share many more stories
of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
The Santa Monica
Pier Centennial Celebration marks a historic date for the well'loved LA
landmark and an important date in Los Angeles history. The premier of "Highwater" benefits the pier in celebration of their Centennial.
