ANNOUNCEMENTS:

From Slashdot
from the virtual-sandboxes dept.
"The Washington Post announces that President Bush has signed legislation to create a .kids.us domain. The legislation mandates that those with a .kids.us site not be allowed to link to any site outside the .kids.us domain."
O-well at the very least, it makes filtering easy.

- "Every study of Internet filters software that keeps kids away from porn and other inappropriate Web sites has shown that they are flawed, but a new study commissioned by the Kaiser Family Foundation and published by the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that their effectiveness depends how they are configured."
"Setting the filters at their least restrictive level can block most porn sites and still provide access to the vast majority of health sites. But if the filters are set on more restrictive levels, they can block up to 25 percent of health related sites."
"The study, "See No Evil: How Internet Filters Affect the Search for Online Health Information," [http://www.kff.org/content/2002/20021210a/] appears in the Dec. 11 edition of The Journal of the American Medical Association and is summarized at www.kff.org." (from CBS News>

LS Thoughts - I thought that this was going to be a one-sided article, but after reading through it, I understood this not to be true. The author basically states that filters can work...sometimes, depending on how tight the restrictions are, based on the person doing the restricting. I haven't read the study, so I can't comment on that, but it would seem to me that any restriction is a bad thing. If there is a remote possibility that valid information is not getting to the user, than this doesn't make me feel comfortable. Also, the article seems to relay that librarians and teachers should be the ones to decide how much the student should be able to access. Ouch, I get itchy just thinking about that. It looks like The New York Times also picked up on the story. (12/10/2002 7:19:00 PM)

- "The Internet, which some feared would mean the end of libraries, has turned out to be more friend than foe, said the executive director of the American Library Association."
"People search the Internet then head to the library saying, "I have 5,000 hits, now what do I do?" Keith Fiels said in an address Friday at the annual conference of the association."
"The Internet has whetted the public's desire for information," Fiels said. Library patrons have become more sophisticated in their research needs but also have more sophisticated expectations."
"It was a popular notion about 10 years ago that people would just sit at home and download books, he said. "That hasn't occurred. . . . People want to come in and meet with a person. There's also a myth that everything is free on the Internet. It's not. The library proves a pretty good value if you can get it from them." (from The Arizona Republic) (12/8/2002 7:21:00 PM)

    New LINKS of interest:
- "A 10-agency alliance last week announced the launch of science.gov, a Web portal that provides free access to science-related reports, databases and other information from the federal government."
"Billing itself as "FirstGov for Science," the site links to information from more than 14 federal science and technology organizations. It is intended primarily for the education and library communities, but can also be helpful for businesses, scientists and the general public."
"Users can search for any federally sponsored research and development project by subject, and the search will be performed across all 14 organizations. Users also can search in specific subject areas, such as applied science and technologies, computers and communication, health and medicine, and science education. (from Federal Computer Weekly)

YOU WROTE: snippets from e-mails:
With THANKS to our friends in SWILSA
Some of our libraries have been asking about translations into Spanish
for signs, flyers, etc. Sue, as a result of a quest I sent her on, has found a great site: SOL (Spanish in Our Libraries) and PLUS (Public Libraries Using Spanish) website:  http://www.sol-plus.net/index.htm
She'll be putting it in our next NewsLine, but I thought you all might
be interested, if you haven't seen it yet.

Literacy skills - Map division
I read a story yesterday about the horrendous geography skills of people. Not just Americans, though something
like 60% of people can't find Iraq on a map. ("Mr. President, the troops are waiting outside of Indiana and waiting for your signal to attack, sir.") Turns out 60% of people in Iran can't find Iraq on a map, either.

Anyway, the dumbest of the dumb: 11% of Americans can NOT even find the United States on a map.
