ANNUAL SURVEY The survey is due 10/31/03.
Upcoming Grant Application Deadlines
LSTA Grants
The State Library is offering FY04 LSTA Competitive Grants
to Iowa libraries. The deadline for grant applications is August
1, 2003. There will be two ICN information sessions on June 17,
from 9:00 - 11:00 am or June 18, 2:00 to 4:00 pm. for those interested
in the application. The grant handbook, application and guidelines
are located at

Session 1 is June 17 9:00 to 11:00. Current
scheduled sites are: Bettendorf CC1, Davenport PL, Denison HS, Dubuque-Stout PL, Arlington-Starmont
HS, Elgin PL, Council Bluffs PL, Waterloo PL,
Eldora PL and State Library Des Moines.
Session 2 is June 18 2:00 to 4:00. Current

The North Iowa Library Cooperative is sponsoring a two-day (15 hours)
workshop entitled, "Building Blocks to Life-long Learning: The Big
6 and
Information Literacy" August 6 & 7, 2003.
This will be a informative and informational workshop which will assist
librarians of all types to work with patrons. The Wednesday session will
be
presented by Bob Berkowtiz, co-developer of The Big 6 in which you will
learn a systematic approach to find, use, apply, and evaluate information
for specific needs and tasks. Thursdays session will be conducted by Mary
Jo Langhorne, Mary Wegner, and Mary Cameron. Their sessions will talk about
Information Literacy: what it is, why it is so important, and how school,
public, and academic libraries can work together to promote it.

Disaster Recover Workshop
to be held at the University of Iowa on Sept. 15-16, 2003.
Upper Midwest Conservation Association and the University of Iowa
Collections Coalition are cosponsoring "Disaster Response: Salvaging
Museum, Library and Archival Collections," a two-day workshop, Sept. 15-16,
2003, that will stress hands-on participation in salvaging collections
after a disaster (primarily water and fire damage).
Iowa Arts Grant writing Workshop held September 23, 2003.
The workshop is designed for artists, educators, communities and
organizations who are seeking funding support for arts-related activities
at
benefit Iowans. This particular session will be directed at public
libraries. Hear directly from grant program managers for the Iowa Arts
Council and the Department of Cultural Affairs on what review panels expect
to see in grant proposals. Learn about developing powerful grant proposals,
the new E-Grant application system, new granting programs and changes to
program guidelines.

Exciting News!!! ????
As you may or may not be aware, Oprah has started up her book club again!
Today on her show she announced the first selection of her new book club
which is, East of Eden, by John Steinbeck. In the past we have partnered
with the Oprah show to provide free copies of the chosen title to ALA member
libraries (high school, public and ALA Chapters). With the new club, we will
once again to be able to offer this exciting member-only benefit to these
libraries. In addition, we will now be providing free copies to member community
college libraries.

The annual survey is ready for use. To access the online survey go

Annual Survey. The survey is due October 31, 2003.
All public libraries that have access to Internet
are required to submit the FY 2003 annual survey with Web Collect.
MORE: In response to several questions: report Gates Foundation computer
grants as
Non-Governmental Income on Line 31 of the Annual Survey (if funding was
received by June 30, 2003).
Several libraries have asked about a print copy of the Annual Survey. The
survey form and instructions are on the Annual Survey page at

Public Libraries with Internet are required to submit the survey online.
The link to Web Collect is also on the Annual Survey web page.
The login and password were in the annual survey packet that went to every

1) Four Year-end Reports Due July 31st: Time for a friendly paperwork
reminder:-) 4 year-end reports are due at the State Library by July 31st.
And they are: Open Access Annual Report, Access Plus Annual Report, Direct
State Aid Final Report, and Infrastructure Final Report. The Open Access
Report asks you to indicate how many items your library checked out to Open
Access customers in FY'03. The Access Plus Reports asks you to indicate how
many items your library loaned through SILO--through the mail--to other Iowa
libraries. And the Direct State Aid and Infrastructure Reports asks you to
explain what your library spent those funds for, whether for collections,
programming, supplies, technology, furniture, etc.

2) Two Grant-Writing Workshops Coming Up: Mark your calendars for two
grant-writing workshops coming up this fall. The first is sponsored by the
Iowa Arts Council in partnership with the State Library. The Iowa Arts
Grant-Writing Workshop will be held September 23rd at ICN locations
statewide. The workshop is designed for artists, educators, communities,
and organizations who are seeking funding support for arts-related
activities that benefit Iowans. This particular session will be directed
at

A second opportunity to learn more about grants happens October 28-29.
Entitled "The Siouxland Grant-Writing Workshop: The ABCs and XYZs of
Grant-Writing," this is a 2-day workshop at the Marina Inn in South Sioux
City, NE. Several organizations are sponsoring this event, among them the
Iowa Office of Rural Health, Nebraska Health and Human Services, and the
Wellmark Foundation. NWILS expects to receive a detailed agenda by
mid-August. While this workshop may be geared toward health care providers,
this might also present an opportunity for public libraries to partner with
local hospitals or health care agencies to provide community service,
dissemination of health information, etc. We'll keep you posted as we learn
more details...
