This week in Eye-Opener:
1) "County-By-County" Workshops Postponed This Fall
2) Plenty of C.E. Credits for Gates Computer Training
3) "Lakeside Learning Retreat" in September
4) Spirit Lake Friends Group Takes a Holiday
5) Speaking of Library Friends Groups
1) "County-By-County" Workshops Postponed This Fall: clip
2) Plenty of C.E. Credits for Gates Computer Training:
Northwest library
staff can harvest bushels of c.e. credits this fall, thanks in large part
to
the extensive training provided through the Gates Library Computer Project.
Over 90 Northwest libraries are receiving Gates computers, which will be
rolling into the region in August and September. The State Library
has
awarded c.e. credit for the on-site training and other classes. NWILS will
be sending out c.e. certificates in waves, once we hear from you which
classes your staff actually attend. The same is true for NE with the
same criteria.
Here's a breakdown of the possible
credits:
For libraries receiving 1-2 Gates computers = a possible total of 10 credits
for the on-site applications / systems administration training.
For libraries receiving 4-6 Gates computers = a possible total of 14 credits
for the on-site applications / systems administration training.
For libraries receiving content servers = a possible total of 9 credits
For all granted libraries = an additional 6 credits for attending the FUT
class (follow-up training that happens about 4 weeks after on-site
installations)
A reminder: you're welcome to contact NWILS for your library's training
dates so you can protect those on your calendar. Remember, there's
the
on-site training, the follow-up class, and the content server class...
3) "Lakeside Learning Retreat" in September: clip
4) Spirit Lake Friends Group Takes a Holiday: clip
5) Speaking of Library Friends Groups: A recent question on IOWALIB
prompts
this reminder. If any Northwest library is interested in establishing
a
Friends Group, please let me know. NWILS has many resources available
to
you--not the least of which is an "in-the-flesh" presentation to your local
library board:-)
This is also true for NEILSA.
For instance, Sanborn P.L. recently asked me to join their
board, along with a core group of volunteers, to talk about the process of
starting a Friends Group, the steps and time involved, ideas for Friends
projects, etc.
There's lots to learn from strong and well-established groups like those
active in LeMars, Storm Lake, and Spirit Lake, to name just a few.
FRIENDS
OF LIBRARIES SOURCEBOOK is a very good resource; NWILS and the State Library
has copies to borrow. Did you know that SILO now hosts a new listserv
expressly for Friends members to network and share news? To join the
Iowa
Friends Listserv, go to http://mail.silo.lib.ia.us/~mailman to subscribe.
And one more place: Friends of Libraries USA is a national Friends
organization with a great website: http://www.folusa.com/ Let us know
if we
can be of help in this area...

EdLiNC has released a new report on the impact of the E-rate on communities
across America. The report and press release are available for download
from the EdLiNC website at: http://www.edlinc.org.
GATES FOUNDATION GRANTS:
FYI charging the public to use Gates Foundation
computers.
According to the Gates Foundation, computers purchased with a Gates Foundation
grant are to be offered to the public to be used with no charge. (that is
the whole point).
It is acceptable to charge for consumables such as printing or disks.
CIPA – At this point you should not make any decisions.
We are putting together a notebook of "How to deal with CIPA" this may turn
into a web notebook, I do not know yet.
BUT I do know that in order to do that I need some e-mail feedback from you.
What do you want in such a notebook?
Sample Policies?
Filtering sources?
What? We received some very good suggestions, and no I can not "...make
it go away...".
More suggestions are welcome.
